Cast, jig, or troll. Find a multitude of sustainable fishing options in the cold waters of Clayoquot Sound.
Anglers of all levels can get out on the water, learn about the local ecosystem and possibly come home with fresh seafood. Winter and spring highlights include spot prawns and Dungeness crab, while excellent bottom fishing happens from April through November. Chinook salmon can be pursued year-round, and Coho salmon and Albacore tuna round out summer and fall.
Saltwater fishing
While the main goal for many anglers is to target Chinook salmon offshore, these waters are also home to large bottom fish like halibut, lingcod, and rockfish. In-shore waters can yield delicate spot prawns, and there’s also Dungeness crab, known for its sweet, mild flavour. Try your hand at fly fishing for salmon on calm in-shore waters, too. Charters can usually be scheduled as a full ten-hour day, or a five to six-hour half-day.
Freshwater fly fishing
Pack up and board a seaplane or helicopter to access the remote streams and lakes around Nuu-chah-nulth territory. Cutthroat, Rainbow and the feisty Steelhead trout inhabit these waters. The rule here is strictly catch-and-release, so you may want to have a camera handy for the victory shot.
