Oyster Catcher Talk

Familiar to Millions, Understood by Few: the Black Oyster Catcher
Join the Raincoast Education Society for a presentation
with Mark Maftei at the Ucluelet Community Centre
Black Oystercatchers are ubiquitous year-round residents all along the rocky coastlines of our region. In fact, they are common up and down the entire Pacific coast of North America. Their wide latitudinal range and (usually) sedentary habits make them an ideal study species. Comparing the diet, habits and movements of individuals from different areas and populations has yielded new insights into the ecology of the species, and a greater understanding of how a variety of environmental factors affect the productivity of intertidal ecosystems.
This talk will share the results of several years of investigations conducted by the RES, ECCC, SFU, and PRNPR into these familiar and fascinating birds.
