As a destination, the imagery we portray becomes the aspirational dream of people coming to Tofino.
We have heard of an increase in bike-related injuries occurring on the MUP and in the National Park Reserve. There is still a persistent, romanticized notion of riding your bike carefree with no helmet, wind in your hair - and we see that in a lot of the content that gets shared through social media.
While we can't prevent all potential injuries, we can educate to ensure that fewer guests are hurt while in-destination. This prevention step can be both through direct messaging, or subliminally in the type of imagery we choose to showcase. This benefits both visitor perception and the number of first responder or hospital visits needed.
If you are teaming up with creators/influencers who are creating content for your business; or reposting content that you have been tagged in, please choose to encourage behaviour that keeps people safe, like wearing a helmet. *This is very demure, very mindful* (see current social media trend started by creator Jools Lebron)
There are so many ways to make content that is still fun and desirable to visitors while nudging them towards safe practices. Examples include:
• Having fun on the water while wearing a PFD;
• Enjoying beach scenes around rocky areas but not on the rocks;
• Avoid posting images and views from Cox Lookout/Vargas Cone (this is an unsanctioned trail in the National Park Reserve);
• Walking the beach with dogs on leash.
It’s easy to showcase how Tofino is beautiful and can be enjoyed respectfully and safely. For more tips on the types of imagery that we ask of creators ourselves, see the"Photography and Filming Guidelines" section of our Media in Tofino page.
