Tourism Tofino was pleased to be a sponsor of the recent Big Wave Risk Assessment Group (BWRAG) Surf Responder Summit that took place July 27-28.
BWRAG is an organization from Hawaiʻi that educates and trains surfers and ocean athletes in ocean risk management and surf rescue. Their mission is to teach surfers how to save the lives of others and their own when emergencies strike in the surf lineup. In the absence of a public lifeguard program in Tofino, we were glad to support the training.
The Summit invited ocean athletes, water safety professionals, and government personnel - of all ages, genders and abilities - from the community to refine their safety knowledge, learn CPR, and basic life-saving medical interventions, conduct in-water training, and discuss issues affecting safety in the ocean arena. The Summit took place over two-days and included both classroom and in-water training, covering topics including Ocean Risk Management, CPR, First-Aid & Medical Interventions, Spot Analysis, Emergency Action Planning, Mindful Breathing & Energy Management, Safety Equipment, and Water Rescue.
