Washed Up Wednesdays 2026 Recap
Tourism Tofino and Surfrider Pacific Rim are pleased to celebrate another successful season of Washed Up Wednesdays, our community beach clean-up initiative.
This summer, 199 residents and visitors participated in Washed Up Wednesdays, helping clean-up more than 18 kg of marine debris from local shorelines. Collected debris included 576 cigarette butts and more than 2.85kg of packaging materials, such as wrappers, bottles, and other single-use items.
This year marked the first summer adding a new clean-up location at First Street Dock (Grice Park & Kayak Launch) area. Participants gathered for a special introduction by ƛaʔuuk, Gisele Maria Martin, and collected a variety of debris from the site, including over 260 cigarette butts and 37 aluminum cans.
A special congratulations to Mark of Nanaimo, BC, the winner of this year's grand prize. Mark will enjoy a complimentary 3-night stay for two at the award-winning Wickaninnish Inn, home to rugged coastal beauty, old-growth rainforest, fresh local cuisine and expansive views of the ocean and of Chesterman Beach.
We extend our sincere thanks to the team at the Wickaninnish Inn for generously donating the grand prize and supporting the program.
Interested in doing your own beach clean? The Tofino Visitor Centre accepts marine debris year-round. All items are sorted and taken to the local Ocean Plastic Depot for recycling, including: Styrofoam, hard plastics, rope, and netting.
