4-Day Itinerary with Kids

A trip to the West Coast is meant to be restorative, even with kids! Here are some ideas to keep everyone happy on a 4-day visit to Tofino:

Our biggest tip: leave room for the unexpected experiences you stumble upon! Maybe your kids will become fascinated with the driftwood washed up along the shoreline and want to spend 2 hours jumping logs. Maybe all of the different animals in tidepools will captivate them. Maybe surfing and playing in the ocean will become their new obsession. This place is full of unpredictable moments of joy - make sure you have the time to embrace them!

Relax, you've got time!

After you’ve enjoyed the journey getting to the coast, take a moment to settle into your home away from home and let Island time sink in. Be sure to book a stay that invites play - check out the Packages & Offers to get activities bundled with your stay.

    Day 1

Take the rest of the day easy – no schedule, just free play. Bring a ball to the beach, build sandcastles, play a game of tag, or jump rope with washed-up bull kelp. Keep it uncomplicated, the beach is a natural playground!

    Have a no-fuss dinner out:

    Day 2

Choose one bigger activity that involves the whole family as the core part of the day, for example: Family surfing lessons!

    • Start the day with a bite at The Beach Shack (located at the Pacific Sands Beach Resort property) for breakfast to feel energized for a day full of activities
    • Then stretch your legs while keeping the kids entertained by going on a colour walk: get them to point out the things they see in the colour that they chose, or lend them your phone to take photos of what they find.
    • Get suited (and booted – the water is chilly almost all year round) to head into the swell with local instructors who can teach you how to be fun and safe in the waves.
    • Everyone will be hungry after the lesson, so go to Wildside Grill for tacos, sandwiches, or burgers to refuel. You will also get a discount at Chocolate Tofino with your receipt, so save room for homemade gelato after or their chocolate Elixir (melted chocolate hot cocoa)!
    • If your crew still has steam, you can rent bikes and head out on the multi-use path (MUP) to hop between beaches, or ride directly on the sand! There are lots of beautiful Indigenous carvings around town and other public art - see how many you can spot using the Tofino Art Walks trail pass.

After such a big day, head to the sunken lounge at Hotel Zed for a casual dining experience at Roar Tofino. With plenty of board games, a disco room, and a hidden arcade, the kids can come and go as they please while you unwind by the fire.

    Day 3

Venture out in the morning to the Inlet with some binoculars and get curious.

    • Head to the viewing deck right behind Hotel Zed for a great view of the mudflats and the coastal mountains. Peep the BC Bird Trail to see which birds are around while you visit – especially as migration season starts in spring!
    • Head out on the water with a fishing charter and drop some crab pots. Maybe you’ll get to do some wildlife watching as you cruise around or cast a line.
    • Enjoy cooking together and have a crab cookout at your accommodation – this can be a whole family affair!

Then wrap up the night with a game night as you cozy up by the fire!

    Day 4

Enjoy the beaches closest to you in the morning before checkout.

    • As you leave town, take a moment to walk one of the trails in the National Park Reserve, like the Rainforest Loops. Maybe you make a game out of counting the number of banana slugs you can see on your way.
    • Make a stop at Ukee Poke for lunch and have a beach picnic at kʷisitis | Wickaninnish beach. Pop into the interpretation centre with kid-friendly learning stations and Nuu-chah-nulth language and culture.
    • Then stop by the Ucluelet Aquarium to get to see the animals that live in the ocean right here! This collect-and-release aquarium offers hands-on learning experiences with touch tanks and knowledgeable interpreters (open seasonally from March 1 to November 30, from 10 AM - 4:30 PM daily, with last admission at 4 PM).
