Rain or Shine
What to do with kids in Tofino when it rains?
We’ve got you covered for family-friendly activities, whether you get sun or rain — and honestly, most of these you can do in either condition!
TLDR: rainy day activities, kids' activities, family-friendly activities, fun in the rain or sun
When it rains...
Spring showers bring May flowers, as they say, so let's start with what to do in the rain:
Board Games & Hidden Arcade
Head to the Hotel Zed sunken lounge for an afternoon of board games and snacks at the ROAR Coffee + Shop or later on in the afternoon for Happy Hour or the Lounge menu at ROAR Tofino. Bask in the 70s-inspired nostalgia and join the kids for a dance party in the disco room or challenge them for the top score with a hang in the hidden arcade.
There is also a playground outside and a beautiful forested boardwalk to the mudflats behind the resort overlooking the coastal mountains. Hotel Zed is also dog-friendly and has a bikeable lobby.
Multisport Simulator
Book the Pacific Rim Multisport Simulator at Long Beach Golf Course - open daily from 9 AM - 4:30 PM, or until 8 PM for the simulator if you book in advance. The simulator is $40/hr to rent, which is also a great activity to do with a group of friends.
If the weather turns around, you can book a tee time on the 9-hole Championship Course, head to the driving range, or play a round of mini golf.
Free Nuu-chah-nulth Beading Workshops
On Thursdays from 5 PM to 8 PM, make your way to the ʔuušmaʕukʔas Arts & Commerce Hub for the Tofino Art Council's free beading workshops with Nuu-chah-nulth artist, Elizabeth George. There is also the craft closet open for free play creations. Look for the blue building near the Co-op Food Store and you will find the entrance below the Tofino Legion.
Tidepooling
Check to see when the tides are low, get some rain boots on and have a peek at the creatures living between the rocks! There is a whole world unfolding just below the water's surface with hermit crabs, mussels, sea stars, barnacles, anemones, and more. Be cautious to avoid stepping on slippery rocks and always face the ocean to keep an eye on the waves and tide. Looking for more information on these intertidal animals? Ask Raincoast Education Society (you can check their calendar for upcoming workshops and events) or the Ucluelet Aquarium (open every year from March 1 to November 30).
Experience the Rainforest
Head to nature's umbrella under the tree canopy and discover the rainforest in all of its glory in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. Compare and contrast the Rainforest Trail with the Shorepine Bog Trail - two vastly different ecosystems!
Surfing!
You’ll be getting wet anyway, so why not take a surf lesson in the rain! You can even go as a whole family! This is a great way to be CoastSmart - learning from local surf instructors will help you know what to look for to stay safe in the water.
When the sun shines...
And here are some ideas for those overcast days or when we get graced by the sun!
Have a beach fire
Have a beach fire - imagine coming out from the surf and warming up by the fire? Or roasting marshmallows with your kids as the sun sets? Beach fires are only allowed on tinwis Beach and Chesterman Beaches, and in an elevated fire appliance. For details on fire regulations, see the District of Tofino, and always check to see if there are fire bans in place.
Tuff City Skate Park
Skateboard or scooter at the Tuff City Skate Park, next to the Village Green. There is an inclusive community of skaters who welcome youth who are just starting out.
Big Tree Trail
Take a boat to the Big Tree Trail in wanačas hiłḥuuʔis Tribal Park to stand beside awe-inspiring ancient cedars. You can either book a kayaking trip - some operators have tandem kayaks - or you can take the Tofino Water Taxi across the harbour for your self-guided walk.
Play on the beach!
Pass or kick a ball around and let your World Cup dreams soar with soccer on the beach! Bocce and frisbee are other popular family beach activities.
Bike Around
Leave the car behind and rent bikes to cruise the beaches or the Multi-Use Path (MUP) between town and the National Park Reserve. You will probably find spots along the way that you didn't know were there!
