Reading Break

Dearest gentle reader,

There’s a collective pull to reconnect with analogue forms of media these days, like zines, film photography and books.

This year feels like the rebirth of the romance novel – from the film revamp of the classic romantic tragedy Wuthering Heights to the hit series Heated Rivalry bringing queer romance to the forefront, to the upcoming Our Perfect Storm by Canadian author Carly Fortune, set right here in Tofino… it feels like the right moment to plan your reading retreat to Tofino.

TLDR: inspiration for a reading retreat in Tofino with itinerary and book ideas.

    Know where to go

There are so many spots around Tofino that make ideal reading nooks: grab a morning coffee and a bite at the Driftwood Café at the Wickaninnish Inn; have homemade soup for lunch at the Common Loaf Bake Shop; sit by the fire at Middle Beach Lodge Resort for their happy hour; and wrap up the day with dinner at the Great Room at Long Beach Lodge Resort, overlooking beautiful č̓aḥayiis | Cox Bay.

Take time to smell the flowers

When you want a change of scenery, strolling around town and admiring the views of the harbour and coastal mountains, or the rhododendrons in bloom (usually late April to mid-May), might be just the ticket. Find curated home goods at For Keeps, jewellery made in-house by Lisa Fletcher at the Factory, and Indigenous art at House of Himwitsa.

Step into local bookshops, Mermaid Tales Bookshop and Harbourview Coffeehouse, which usually reopens mid-spring. You can also find a few little free libraries in town, including one in front of Mermaid Tales, and another along Second St in Tofino in front of St. Columba Church.

With the internet flooded with wonderful recommendations, it may be hard to pick just one. Let us help you feel grounded in place with a list of locally-authored reads, which can all be purchased at the Tofino Visitor Centre:

Novels:

Poetry & Art Books:

Short Stories & Memoirs:

In the end, no reading retreat would be complete without meandering beach walks, embodying that 'main character energy' of your own novel.
