Part 2:  Whale Watching and Surfing in Tofino

Now that you’ve done the scenic drive from the Comox Valley to Tofino, it’s time to check into the West Coast cedar warmth of the Wickaninnish Inn.  It’s your art-filled oceanfront cocoon on the western edge of Chesterman Beach – with some award-winning food and spa options.  This is your home base for 2 nights as you explore Tofino and take in the 29th annual Pacific Rim Whale Festival.

But first…  Get suited up for your whale watching excursion with Jamie’s Whaling Station!  Maureen Fraser of the Common Loaf Bake Shop recommends getting a front seat in a zodiac boat, and the covered 65 foot Leviathan II is your other option for getting out on the water and observing these gentle giants.  Dress warmly for your time on the water – and definitely bring your camera to capture those elusive moments, recommends West Coast photographer Douglas Ludwig.

Your group surf lesson with Tofino’s Pacific Surf School is also “on deck”, and instructor Hannah Stevenson (who also competes in the annual Queen of the Peak women’s surf competition) shares that you’ll have way more fun than expected, that you won’t be cold – and don’t be surprised if you get hooked after only one lesson!  You’ll learn about surf etiquette, proper technique and will wade into our cool water to get up on your board while wearing a high-quality wetsuit, all part of your Whale of a Ski Trip!

Watch for our next blog post, where Tofitians tell us about their favourite events at the Pacific Rim Whale Festival, returning March 14-22.

*Following some great conditions over the holidays,  the warm, wet weather experienced since the latter part of January and early February throughout the West Coast has forced Mount Washington to put their winter operations on hold until the colder weather and our legendary west coast snow returns.  We are all optimistic that the lifts will be spinning again soon!

** In the unlikely event that spring conditions persist on Mount Washington, the winner of the 4 night getaway will have the choice to opt for an alternative Alpine/North Central Island experience *or* can opt to redeem the 4-night Vancouver Island vacation in March 2016.
