Christen Dokk Smith is a classically trained carver, living in Tofino, BC. His exquisite carving and sculpture is a culmination of old world craftmanship, west coast design, and contemporary innovation.

Hailing from Norway, Christen trained under master woodcarver Bjarte Aarset at the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. During his four-year apprenticeship, Christen trained in the classical European way of carving, focusing on Viking, Medieval, Baroque, and Rococo carving. During this time he also learned the art of historical restoration and was commissioned to make many high-precision replicas for museums, churches, and other historical buildings.

In 2012 Christen relocated to the Vancouver Island, and made his home in Tofino, where he has been inspired by the indigenous carving traditions of the Tla-o-qui-aht.

Christen currently carves from Henry Nolla’s iconic Carving shed on North Chesterman beach near The Wickaninnish Inn.

Visitors are welcome to stop but the Shed or to contact him directly for inquiries.
